Ruby on Rails Hosting

If I've got a little side project written in Ruby on Rails and I want to host it, where should I go?

I know TextDrive is the "official" RoR host, and I'm aware of the wiki listing many other hosting companies that support RoR. I'd like to hear people's opinions of them: who's good, who's bad, who's a good value for the money, etc.

This is a small project, nothing huge in terms of traffic or size. Just standard RoR gems and setup. I'm after reliability, flexibility (easy SSH in, for example), ease of use.

Some more info on DreamHost:

They are excellent for cost, features, and ease-of-use (especially if you are an expert with linux). The ssh access is the best I've ever seen for shared hosting.

The servers are all on debian:

$ cat /etc/debian_version
3.1

$ uname -a
Linux alameda 2.4.29-grsec+w+fhs6b+gr0501+nfs+a32+++p4+sata+c4+gr2b-v6.189 #1 SMP Mon Feb 7 13:23:30 PST 2005 i686 GNU/Linux

$ ruby --version
ruby 1.8.5 (2006-08-25) [i386-linux]

$ gem --version
0.9.2

I think they try to do the best they can for reliability, but it's definitely the weak point. Personally, I suspect that's the case for all shared-hosting.

They try to keep people informed about reliability issues on this page:

(Note: 5 hour planned outage this weekend! First time I've ever seen that in 1 year, though.)

They have an automated "outage reporting" tool where if two unique accounts report and outage, and both are on the same server, server admins look into the problem quite quickly. You have to wait and hope a 2nd person will use the tool, but once that happens, I've found resolution quite good.

But yeah, outages should be expected. I'd say I'm down a couple hours a month.

On the bright side: paying $8/month. $4/month for the first 2 years if you count the $97 discount.

[ps. man, these blogger "captcha" images are hard! 3rd try!]

If you're keen to use a VPS rather than shared hosting, check out SliceHost. www.slicehost.com, they're Rails developers so compatibility will be fine - and offer a great VPS packages. I'm quite happy with them, and particularly like their liberal contracts. Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Marcus

We are currently hosting VibeReview.com with Kattare. Overall they are a great hosting company. Connection is fast and reliable, and customer service are a bunch of old school hackers who actually know what they're talking about. Also, check out VibeReview for great sex toys with reviews!
